March 26, 2026

Dear TMSU Community,

We share the concerns about both the psychological and physical safety of students and the wider campus community in regards to events that bring active or former military personnel onto, or near campus. To be clear: TMSU does not endorse the SSI-hosted event scheduled to take place on March 26, 2026.

Since issuing our statement on Tuesday, TMSU has communicated its concerns directly to Students Supporting Israel (“SSI”), urging them to reconsider this event. As previously stated, TMSU does not have the power to ban events organized by any student group, on campus, or off, nor has it funded SSI. The TMSU’s Issues Policy #9 explicitly outlines TMSU’s opposition to policing and militarization on campus.

An independent external investigation is underway and will determine whether any TMSU policies have been violated. If violations are found to have occurred, a range of sanctions are available based on these policies. We recognize the importance of a timely conclusion to this investigation, but must ensure that fairness, independence, and integrity of the process is maintained. All concerns received regarding this event will continue to be shared with the independent investigator.

We are grateful to all of those who have sincerely engaged with us to express concerns about student safety and the role of TMSU in representing the interests of its members. We encourage you to continue to hold us to account and engage with the Union as we continue working with the Board and staff to revive and establish pathways for members to become more deeply involved in TMSU’s activities, as well as democratic processes on campus.

Remember: TMSU is YOUR UNION.

Overcoming the many challenges faced by TMSU in recent years will require shaking off the cynicism and apathy that had allowed self-interested parties to prey on the Union. Turning TMSU around will ultimately depend on the active ongoing participation of passionate, service-minded students committed to making positive change not only for a more vibrant campus community, but for a more just world.
