March 24, 2026

The TMSU is aware of concerns raised by students and members of the broader campus community regarding an upcoming off-campus event organized by a student group active on campus, Students Supporting Israel (“SSI”).

This is not the first time that concerns have been raised regarding similar SSI events.

In December 2025, partially in response to similar complaints, the TMSU retained an independent, external investigator to examine allegations it had received against two campus groups – SSI and Students for Justice in Palestine-Toronto Metropolitan University. That investigation is actively underway and is being conducted at arm’s length from the TMSU.

Any concerns about the upcoming event will be shared with the independent investigator for consideration. Student groups that have been recognized by TMSU and that violate TMSU policies can face a range of sanctions including warnings, suspension, and possible revocation of recognition as a TMSU Campus Group, in accordance with the TMSU Campus Groups Manual.

Although a wide range of student groups can apply for TMSU recognition, making them eligible to apply for funding from TMSU, these student groups are, and remain at all times, independent student-led and controlled organizations. TMSU has not provided any funding or support for SSl. The TMSU does not generally endorse, sponsor, or organize the events or activities of individual campus groups, and it is not in the TMSU’s power to ban this, nor any other student group’s event. TMSU also has no ability to control the booking of university spaces, which is within the jurisdiction of Toronto Metropolitan University (“TMU”).

The TMSU is aware that the university has also retained an independent investigator to examine matters arising from events in September and November 2025. As an autonomous organization, the TMSU’s investigation is separate from TMU’s process.

The TMSU is committed to advocating for student rights and providing vital student supports and services, while also ensuring that its campus group policies are enforced fairly and thoroughly. The TMSU encourages any student who has concerns regarding the conduct of a TMSU-recognized campus group to contact the TMSU Campus Groups Coordinator at campusgroups@yourtmsu.ca.

Those with specific concerns can contact the Centre for Student Development and Counselling for support and/or Community Safety and Security with any safety concerns they may have. Student Care offers support to students navigating complex challenges, including those affecting mental health and can be contacted at: studentcare@torontomu.ca. For concerns about safety, students are encouraged to reach out to security@torontomu.ca or 416-979-5040. Personal safety planning is also available through community.engagement@torontomu.ca.
