My name is Anthony Gerges, a 4th year Business Technology Management student. I am running for the position of President of the Toronto Metropolitan Students’ Union because I think that students need a union that they can trust, understand, and feel a sense of belonging to.
Many students have lost trust in the TMSU over the past few years. I myself have felt disconnected from the union since 2024, while others are unsure how their student fees are being used. My goal is to restore that trust through focus on the following pillars: financial transparency and accountability, rebuilding student engagement, and better governance and oversight.
Firstly, I want to make sure students can see where their money is being spent. This is something that I will work towards by introducing quarterly financial reports, budget breakdowns, and vendor disclosure.
Second, I want to rebuild student engagement and school spirit. One of the reasons I wanted to run was because of the lack of school spirit. Too many students feel like they don’t belong or want to be on campus. Too many students feel disconnected from campus life and the union itself. By supporting student-led initiatives, strengthening collaboration with clubs and course unions, and expanding student advocacy, we can create a stronger and more vibrant student community.
Finally, I will advocate the need for better governance and oversight at TMSU. Improved measures of accountability, as well as better transparency, can go a long way towards ensuring that the student union is working for the best interests of students.
TMSU should be an organization that represents students well, manages students’ fees well, and works towards creating a better campus community. I am running because I think we can work towards creating a more trustworthy, more transparent, more accountable, and more engaged student union.
